Amber Vocelle, DO, PhD, has received a Pediatric Research Award from the American Neuromuscular Foundation for her insightful case study highlighting the value of multidisciplinary care in treating acute flaccid myelitis (AFM). Her work underscores the collaborative roles of neurology, PM&R, neurosurgery, and therapy in a pediatric AFM patient’s management and recovery. “This is a clinical case study that I wanted to share to highlight the importance of multidisciplinary management of acute flaccid myelitis,” said Dr. Vocelle. The case demonstrates how early diagnosis, therapy prescription, and timely nerve transfers can significantly improve patient outcomes.
Inspired by recent discussions at the AANEM Annual Meeting on optimal timing for nerve transfers, Dr. Vocelle emphasized the need for early referral. “Historically, nerve transfers were not attempted until 6-9 months after injury… current literature suggests referral ideally 2-3 months after injury,” she explained. The case also revealed unexpected extensive nerve damage, leading to multiple neurolysis and nerve/fascicle transfers. “This made me realize there is still a lot I do not know about nerve injury surgical management,” she reflected.
Dr. Vocelle hopes this case encourages others to adopt a team-based approach. “I hope this case will encourage other providers to refer patients with possible nerve injuries to neurology and PM&R colleagues,” she said. Grateful for the award, she added, “This award affirms the work I’ve dedicated myself to and reflects the collaborative spirit of the mentors, colleagues, and patients who have shaped my journey.” She looks forward to presenting at the AANEM annual meeting and deepening her knowledge in pediatric NM care.
