Reena Bastin, MD, Receives ANF's 2024 Pediatric Research Award
Reena Bastin, MD, has received one of the Pediatric Research Awards for her abstract, “Juvenile Myasthenia Gravis (MG) With Response to Ravulizumab-Cwvz.” Dr. Bastin aimed to improve clinical outcomes for pediatric patients with MG.
Dr. Bastin says that the patient in this study showed minimal or adverse reactions to treatments such as pyridostigmine and plasmapheresis and that ravulizumab-cwvz is the first and only long-acting C5 complement inhibitor for treating anti-acetylcholine receptor generalized MG in adults. She notes that this shows the success of ravulizumab-cwvz usage in a pediatric patient with anti-AChR generalized MG with marked clinical improvement, and that the improvement after administering ravulizumabcwvz indicates potential benefits for similar patients.
Dr. Bastin is excited about winning the award and what the future offers. “I am extremely grateful for this award and to my mentors, Drs. Rezania and Soliven. Watching this patient improve clinically was truly one of my favorite experiences in residency, and I am excited about exploring new treatment possibilities for pediatric MG patients,” she says. She hopes this research highlights positive clinical outcomes and encourages others to continue researching this topic and bring further valuable data to the NM community. In the future, Dr. Bastin looks forward to becoming a NM attending, continuing research throughout her fellowship and beyond, and learning more about NM research at the AANEM Annual Meeting.
Dr. Bastin's abstract will be presented at the 2024 AANEM Annual Meeting in Savannah, Georgia, Oct. 15-18 among all abstracts, including the Best Abstract Award, Best Abstract Runner-Up Award, Residency and Fellowship Member Award, Medical Student Award, and President's Research Award abstracts.
