Nathaniel Wooten, MD, has received a Pediatric Research Award from the American Neuromuscular Foundation.
Nathaniel Wooten, MD, has received a Pediatric Research Award for his compelling case study spotlighting a rare case of ani-3-hydroxy-3-methyl-glutaryl-coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase myopathy reductase in a young child. This condition, though already uncommon, is especially rare in pediatric patients, often leading to significant delays in diagnosis and treatment. His case study not only highlighted the challenges of identifying such a rare disease in children but also
underscored the urgent need for increased awareness and education among clinicians.
Driven by the goal of reducing diagnostic delays which, in many pediatric cases can stretch from months to years, Dr. Wooten hopes that reports like his will pave the way for better screening and faster recognition, especially as AI-based datasets grow more sophisticated. “It is an honor to win this award, but I have to give credit to the patient, our support staff and the mentors that make research possible,” he shared. As he celebrates this achievement, Dr. Wooten looks forward to reconnecting with colleagues at the AANEM Annual Meeting and continuing important conversations within the NM field.
